The NSU artistic residency at Ricklungärden, Saxnås was an opportunity for me to explore and develop my practice in an extraordinary location. The museum is an unusual place that allowed us to live with and experience the collection in a way that would not usually be possible. The buildings sit within a landscape of pine, birch, mountains and frozen lakes, with snow creating surreal formations on top of everything there. I became very interested in the connection between the landscape and the museum interior and in particular the blue-tiled bathroom, a more intimate and familiar space within the wider curated environment. This led to the development of a site-specific virtual sculpture that I exhibited within the bathroom. I have not yet fully completed this work and will continue to develop it over the next few months.
The NSU circle seven organisers carefully selected a group whose disparate practices proved to sympathetically enrich one another. Collaborations formed easily and developed organically over the course of the residency. We cooked, shared food and discussed our work and impressions of the location together in the evenings. The way the group worked together and engaged with the local community became a central part of the experience for me and I feel privileged to have been involved.
